A Purcell woman remains in an Oklahoma City Hospital after sustaining a gunshot wound to the abdomen last Friday just after 10:30 a.m.

Police report Marilyn Cockrill, 76, was rushed to the OKC hospital by Wadley’s EMS for surgery. At last report, she remained in critical condition at the Oklahoma City hospital.

Purcell first responders were called to 2026 S. Green Avenue to investigate an apparent shooting. Charles Cockrill, 86, was questioned following the shooting.

The Purcell Register has attempted to contact the McClain County District Attorney’s office but has yet not heard back from that office.

Purcell Assistant Chief of Police James Bolling told The Register the incident remains under investigation.

According to a police report, Cockrill told investigators he and Marilyn were in their office. She was working at a computer and he was cleaning a .45 caliber pistol.

He told police he thought the gun was unloaded but when he pulled back the slide, the weapon discharged striking Mrs. Cockrill in the abdomen. Cockrill told police he helped her lay down and called 911.

Mr. Cockrill was taken to Purcell Municipal Hospital for treatment of injuries to his wrists due to the handcuffs temporarily placed on him. He was treated and released.

In addition to Purcell Police and Wadley’s EMS, also assisting at the scene were Purcell Fire and the McClain County Sheriff’s
Department.
