Sixty Welsh ponies from six states will be in Purcell this weekend for a show recognized by the Welsh Pony & Cob Society of America.

Show secretary/manager Denise Dougherty said the 3-day event at the McClain County Expo Center is sponsored by the Oklahoma-Kansas Welsh Pony Society.

Ponies are coming from Oklahoma, Texas, Missouri, Mississippi, Florida and South Dakota.

Judges will be Suzan Stevens from Texas and Jackie Luebke-Puetz from Wisconsin.

Judging will begin at 8 a.m. Friday with a line-up of 34 English classes ranging from conformation hunter to working hunter over fences to English pleasure.

These will be followed by western pleasure, carriage driving, pleasure driving and an obstacle course.

Children’s classes are on tap at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Starting with breed classes on Saturday, both judges will place each class in separate shows.

There will be classes for half-Welsh mares, geldings and stallions.

Remaining halter classes for full-blood Welsh ponies will be divided by age. The class lineup includes geldings, fillies, mares, colts and stallions.

Sunday’s schedule for both shows includes roadster, working hunter, conformation hunter, hunt seat equitation and English pleasure.

Ponies will compete in six categories – Welsh ponies under 12.2 hands, Welsh ponies 12.3 to 14.2 hands, Welsh ponies/cob type 13.2 hands and under, Welsh cob, over 13.2 hands, small pony 12.2 hands and under and medium/large pony 12.3 to 14.2 hands.
