An Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics Interdiction Unit attempted to make a traffic stop on I-35 around mm 65 northbound last Thursday evening.
The attempted stop for a traffic violation led to a pursuit with Purcell Police and the McClain County Sheriff’s Department, joining OSBI Agents, when the vehicle they sought fled and pulled off the interstate at the south Purcell exit.
OSBI Public Information Officer Mark Woodward said at some point the female driver dropped off the male passenger with some cash and they took off again.
“The only problem was the male had the key fob so when she got so far away the vehicle died,” Woodward said.
Through work from the three agencies, Mariah Sharmain Sumler, 30, and Delaun Michael Leflore, Jr., 26, were arrested.
Both suspects fled on foot before being apprehended.
Woodward said the pair apparently came from Florida and he thinks they were going to try to purchase some black market marijuana.
“We got some money and two drug buyers off the street,” Woodward said. “Purcell Police and the McClain County Sheriff Deputies were instrumental in making the arrests. All three agencies deserve equal credit.”
The OBN K9 Interdiction Unit is a specialized team of agents and K9s responsible for intercepting illegal narcotics and contraband traveling through Oklahoma.
The unit focuses on highway interdiction to disrupt drug trafficking organizations, particularly along major corridors.
