A call made to a national hot line alleging a shooting at Purcell Junior High Tuesday morning turned out to be a hoax.
That’s according to Purcell Police and school superintendent Dr. Sheli McAdoo.
The call was traced through the school’s IP address to find the identity of the caller.
The police were called just after 9 a.m. and immediately responded to the school. A staging area was set up in the parking lot of Cash Saver with Wadley’s EMS and fire department emergency personnel on hand in case of injuries.
There were none, and no weapon was found at the school either.
The school was immediately placed on a precautionary lock-in mode. After the building was cleared of any danger, the lock-in was lifted and class work resumed.
“We are incredibly proud of how our students and teachers followed our safety protocols,” Dr. McAdoo said in a letter to parents. “We are grateful for the swift and professional response from our local law enforcement partners.”
The on-going investigation quickly identified the individual responsible for the hoax, who is a student at the school. That students could face legal charges, law enforcement officials said.
“We want to be clear that threats of any kind are taken seriously and there will be significant consequences for this action,” Dr. McAdoo said.
The incident is the third such incident at the junior high this school term.
