Defending slow-pitch softball champions prowling

Posted

The Washington Warrior slow-pitch softball team began the chase to defend their State championship Wednesday.

They hosted Blanchard for a three-game series District tournament.

They were coming off big wins against Class 6A No. 7 Westmoore (11-4), Class 6A No. 1 Mustang (14-4) and 6A No. 8 Deer Creek (12-2).

The Warriors are playing at a high level as the road back to Oklahoma City begins.

“We played a couple of good games,” said head coach Tylor Lampkin. “Mustang and Westmoore are really good teams and you always know you’re going to have your hands full.”

Westmoore

Washington and Westmoore remained locked in a tight battle through the first five innings until the Warriors blew the game open with a five-run sixth inning.

Tinley Lucas homered in the first inning, knocking in Abby Wood to put the first runs on the board.

The Warriors scored three more runs in the third inning, thanks to the bat of Maggie Place and her three-run homer.

“The wind was blowing in and we still hit a few out,” Lampkin said.

Elly Allison was 4-4 at the plate and had three RBIs in the game and Wood had two herself.

Washington added one more run in the fifth inning before the big sixth inning scoring bonanza.

Mustang

Washington scored at least two runs in each of the first four innings against Mustang to take a commanding early lead in the second half of the double header.

Skylar Wells went off with three homers in the game. She finished the game 3-4 from the dish with six ribbies.

Olivia Palumbo, Tinley Lucas and Allison each homered as well.

“We had a couple of errors that allowed them to get their runs,” Lampkin said.

Deer Creek

Place homered twice and Wells hit one out too during the Warriors’ win over Deer Creek on Monday.

Place had five RBIs in the game.

Emjay Lucas was 2-3 with a triple and scored twice.

Washington played a clean game in the field with only one error and held Deer Creek to a mere five hits.

Washington was set to host Blanchard Wednesday in the District tournament. It was slated to be a best-of-three series.

The Warriors will find out Regional assignments after all the District games are decided.

The Warriors are 32-3 on the season.
