Playoff time in Wayne

Posted

The Hinton Comets will pay a visit to Wayne Friday night to start the State playoffs.

Hinton – 0-5 in District play and 1-7 overall – is a youthful squad. The Comets hail from District A-3.

“They’re a young football team but very athletic,” said Wayne head coach Brandon Sharp. “They have freshmen and sophomores starting all over the place.”

Hinton’s first three losses came in one-score games.

“They played everyone tight and were in every game,” Sharp said.

Offensively the Comets operate out of the flexbone.

“Their quarterback does a good job running the offense,” Sharp said.

They have a fullback who is over six feet tall and well north of 200 pounds. They use him when they run their veer and midline option plays.

“He’s really big and physical,” Sharp said.

Defensively Hinton runs a 4-3 with the fullback switching over to middle linebacker.

They have a talented freshman who plays the strong-side linebacker spot, according to Sharp.

“They are talented and we’ll have to play well,” Sharp said. “If this team had gotten a few breaks they’d have finished higher in the District than they did.

“We’ll have to get our intensity up. It’s been a couple weeks since we played a game and we still have a bad taste in our mouths from the Ringling game.”

Wayne’s final District game against Stratford last Friday was called off due to COVID-19.

Kickoff for the Hinton game is set for 7 p.m.
