Nice gesture, Mama Dragons

As many of us have said over the years, adversity brings out the best in people.

Such was the case here Monday evening when Star Spencer traveled to Conger Field for a make-up game from last Thursday after a shooting and subsequent death of a Star Spencer student.

With the Oklahoma City Public School’s situation, Purcell’s Mama Dragons prepared the locker room for the visiting Bobcats, stocked with snacks and drinks and even gave the seniors custom Senior Night plaques with their names and numbers on them.

It was a very nice gesture for students who have been through some very tough days recently.

Dragon Head Coach Aaron Dillard said the Purcell Football Family tried to be as nice and hospitable as possible to the young gridders.

Last Thursday night was supposed to be the 2025 Star Spencer Senior Night at Taft Stadium, but due to the shooting all classes and extracurricular activities were canceled last week.

The Star Spencer staff understandably wanted to have the Senior Night to honor their senior players.

So they offered to play it on  Tuesday, but Dillard said that was too close of a turnaround for his team to host Heritage Hall on Friday.

The two schools went back and forth, finally agreeing to play the District game at Purcell on Monday at 5 p.m.

It all worked out with Purcell able to pull off the short-notice game and staff it with the usual Police and Wadley’s EMS presence, as well as concessions, ticket booth workers, press box personel and chain gang crew.

It was a very, very nice gesture by our Mama Dragons showing compassion to a team that’s had some bad days recently, including losing out on its 2025 Senior Night.
