More to see. More to do. More reasons than ever to attend the 2022 McClain County Fair next month.

Fair Manager Johnny Roberts said two of the biggest attractions are new this year.

One will take visitors back in time some 156 years when the Plains were open and the great cattle herds of Texas longhorns were driven across Oklahoma to railheads in towns like Dodge City, Wichita, Abilene and Sedalia.

Bison Hill Chuck wagon Catering will be set up by the fairgrounds entrance on September 9 and 10.

Working off an authentic 1860 Newton chuck wagon, the Bison Hill crew will prepare and serve samples of typical fare on a cattle drive.

Then on September 10, transportation will jump forward a century give or take a few decades.

A car show benefitting Purcell FFA will set up on the grounds west of the Extension office.

Roberts said the registration will open at 10 a.m. Exhibitors will pay a $20 entry fee per vehicle.

Judging will start at noon and awards will be announced at 1 p.m.

Organizers are including a 50-50 pot at the show.

Purcell FFA members will be in attendance to work the show.

“It’s lining up to be something pretty cool,” Roberts said of the car show and chuck wagon.

One change this year will be on the livestock side.

All livestock competing in the fair with the exception of horses will be on site on September 9 and 10.

Livestock classes are on tap on September 10.

Entries are starting to pick up, he added. As of Tuesday morning, there were 248 entries received through the online system.

With an entry deadline looming on Monday, Roberts expects a lot more entries will come in this week.

It all comes down to activities and exhibits for every taste.

Visitors, Roberts promised, “will see a little bit of everything” at this year’s fair.

See you there!
