New class starting times approved by school board

Posted

Legislation passed in the Oklahoma Legislature has forced opening and closing times for three of the four campuses in the Purcell School District to change.

Those time changes were approved Monday night in the Board of Education’s regular monthly meeting at the administration building.

Superintendent Dr. Sheli McAdoo said the legislature, through Senate Bill 1481, mandated 40 minutes of recess time for the elementary, intermediate and junior high schools during non-instructional time.

The mandatory recess legislation now has the elementary school starting at 7:45 a.m. and lasting until 3:05 p.m. The intermediate school will commence class work at 7:50 a.m. with the last bell ringing at 3:10 p.m. The junior high will begin classes at 8:15 a.m. and end at 3:15 p.m.

The extended times are also to comply with the mandated instructional times.

An update on the district’s building projects informed the board the road between the elementary building and new gym will soon be replaced. The curbing is being poured and the school is working with the county on the surface to hold down costs.

The junior high gym and safe room is being finished with the floor being installed, locker room completion and plumbing.

Dr. McAdoo said it should be ready for use when school begins August 20.

The safe rooms at the elementary and intermediate should be ready by November, Dr. McAdoo said.

The board voted to increase the board minutes clerk stipend to $4,000 and approved the graduation requirements for the class of 2030.

Board members updated the bullying policy per OSSBA Policy Services and voted approval of increasing paid meal prices by 15 cents as required by the Oklahoma State Department of Education.

They also approved the adoption and implementation of the Comprehensive School Counseling Program for 2026-2027 and approved an electric utility easement with the Purcell Public Works Authority.

Fund-raisers were approved for PHS STUCO, PHS Library, FFA, PJH Library, Key Club, HS FCCLA, band, choir, Esports and After Prom (2).
