‘Despicable’ party made fun evening

Posted

Saturday’s “Despicable Moon Party” drew a large crowd to the front lawn of the Purcell Multipurpose Center.

The event was sponsored by Purcell’s Parks & Recreation Department, together with Ten Acre Observatory, the Odyssey Astronomy Club and Trish Barker of Barker Realty.

Ten Acre Observatory is owned by resident astronomers Nick and Delynn Lazzaro. Odyssey Astronomy Club was represented by president David Wrenn. Also on hand was Joshua Sewell of the OKC Astronomy Club.

“With their large telescopes and perfectly clear weather, they were able to give everyone an amazing view of Earth’s moon, Saturn, and Jupiter,” said John Blue, Parks & Recreation director.

To go along with the theme of the event, Parks & Recreation played “Despicable Me,” an animated comedy about a James Bond-style villain named Gru trying to steal the moon.

Blue said about 75 people came and went throughout the evening and a constant line of people waited to catch a glimpse of our solar system’s neighbor planets and moon.

Many different groups participated in the event.  Parks & Recreation staff Heaven Chesnutt and Katelyn Eck handed out free popcorn from Pride Popcorn on Main Street.  The Bean Family set up their Mr. Yeti trailer and served hot chocolate stacked high with marshmallows to ward off the evening chill.

Becky Roberts with the Purcell Pioneer Library brought astronomy books that people any age could check out and enjoy at home.
