Lexington’s postseason run came to an end against Oklahoma Christian School on Friday night.
The Saints took control early then pulled away late to win the Class 3A Regionals matchup 50-25.
Freshman post player Blayke Givens led the Lady Dawgs with 12 points.
Lexington (10-16) beat Holdenville 53-44 on Thursday night to reach the consolation semifinals against OCS.
“We played hard enough,” coach Jacobi Couch told The Register. “We just didn’t make enough plays.”
Couch was looking for more energy from his team following a lackluster performance against Bethel in a lopsided District loss Feb. 20.
He got it Thursday night at Jones when the Lady Dawgs turned up the intensity to beat Holdenville behind 22 points and 13 rebounds from Givens. Another freshman, Charlie Ross, added 11 points.
“We didn’t play our best,” Couch said after the victory. “But we played well enough to win, which is always good.”
Lexington trailed 7-1 early but rallied behind Givens, who stayed out of foul trouble, and Ross, who used her speed to score several breakaway baskets after halftime.
But it might have been the Lexington bench that played the biggest role in the comeback, according to Couch.
“We came out with tons of energy; our bench was so loud,” he said. “Those girls don’t get enough credit. Our bench was exceptional.”
Couch was optimistic following the win, calling the game against Oklahoma Christian “winnable.”
Beat the Saints and the Lady Dawgs would get another shot at Bethel for a shot to make the Area tournament.
Instead, Lexington’s season has come to an end.
“We have overcome a lot this season with one of our best players going down in game one,” Couch said, referring to Marleigh Givens, a 5-11 post player, who tore her ACL.
“These girls showed up everyday day and competed.”
Couch said seniors Lexie Torres and Hadley Wilkins “have left this program better than they found it.”
“I’ve had Lexie since she was a freshman, and she is such a great kid and seeing her grow up has been nothing short of amazing, and she will go on to do some great things,” he said.
“Hadley came in as a sophomore and she made amazing strides as a basketball player and a person. She will be missed going forward.”
Couch praised Blayke Givens for stepping in following her sister’s injury and growing into a key contributor.
“Blayke Givens started coming along in the last two games, leading us in scoring and she is just a freshman,” he said. “We are young and bringing back a lot of good pieces. I’m just so proud of this team and excited for the future.”
