Success is coming slowly for Lexington’s slow-pitch softball team.

A pair of lopsided losses to Tecumseh and Washington to open the season followed by wins over Little Axe and Berryhill.

Then came seven losses in five days, including five at the McLoud Slow Pitch Festival over the weekend.

Interim coach Kallie McMahan prefers to take the ups and downs in stride.

“We’re playing the top teams in the state, but each game we’re getting a little better,” McMahan told The Register.

“We’re young but we’re finding our groove. In all honesty, we’re in too big of a class so it’s tough. We should be classified as 3A or 4A, but we’re playing in 5A.”

Washington thumped the Lady Bulldogs 19-0 on March 24 and 18-3 on Thursday, the first day of the festival. To add insult to injury, Lexington lost 16-1 to Washington's JV team the next day.

McLoud beat Lexington by scores of 17-4 on Thursday and 11-1 on Friday, and Dale won 22-4 on Friday and 15-0 on Monday night. The Lady Bulldogs lost 15-0 to North Rock Creek on Monday.

“It was tough but a good learning experience,” McMahan said. “We beat Berryhill in a comeback win. The girls really rallied together and pulled off a 12-10 win. The girls are learning how to play together and it’s all starting to come together.”

In a 10-4 win over Little Axe, senior Briley Lacquement had three hits, including two doubles, and drove in three runs. Senior Lexi Torres also had three RBIs for Lexington.

Against Berryhill, Lexington trailed 10-7, then scored five runs in the third to take control. Lacquement had the big hit, a bases-loaded triple, in the inning. Brodie Anderson pitched 3.2 innings of relief to get the win and knocked in two runs. Charlie Ross and Cote Garver each had two RBIs for the Lady Jays.

Lexington (2-9) will compete in the Washington tournament on Thursday and Friday. The Lady Bulldogs will host games on Thursday, according to McMahan.
