Lady Warriors clip Jones, remain undefeated

Posted

Washington’s No. 1 ranked Lady Warriors held No. 4 Jones to nine second-half points on their way to a 43-38 win over the Longhorns last Tuesday.

“I was proud of the challenge the team took on themselves to hold Jones like they did in the second half,” head coach Kale Simon said.

After giving up 29 points to the Longhorns in the first half, and finding themselves down by five points at halftime, Washington found another gear defensively.

They allowed a measly two points in the third quarter and only seven in the final stanza.

“We became the aggressors and disrupters,” Simon said. “We pressed them in the full court and played better one-on-one defense. Our help defense was better too.”

Offensively the Warriors leaned on sophomore Kelby Beller as she had a game-high 21 points.

Breanna Lindert scored nine points and Preslee Johnson had eight.

“We didn’t play our best and we were pretty sloppy,” Simon said. “But Jones caused some of that and credit them. We didn’t execute very well against their zone.”

Cashion

Washington defeated Cashion 68-18 last Friday night.

Lindert paced the Warriors with 21, followed by Shelbie Caveness with 16 and Beller with 13 points.

“The first half of the game was the best ball we’ve played this season,” Simon said. “Our ball movement was really good.”

Washington opened up the game with a 26-8 lead in the first quarter and never let Cashion back in it.

Bertha Teague time

The Warriors now turn their attention to the prestigious Bertha Frank Teague Tournament next week.

They open the tournament with Hartshorne on December 28 at 3 p.m. in Ada

The Warriors will try to sharpen their game leading up to the tournament.

“We’re trying to refine what we are doing and who we are,” Simon said. “We’re trying to create a sureness in who we are. We want to put ourselves in a position to win that thing. We’re attacking the tournament with no excuses but if we don’t win three games we’ll re-evaluate and keep going.”

Washington is 7-0.

Boys

The Warrior boy’s team picked up a win against Cashion (51-35) but fell to Jones (58-49).

Jace Myers led the team in scoring against Cashion with 16 points.

Mason Adams scored nine in the win.

Adams had a big night in the game against Jones, scoring 24 points the game.

Washington is 4-3 and ranked No. 17 in Class 3A.
