Posted

Head coach Josh Trent and his Lady Bulldogs kicked off their season last week with wins over Indiahoma, 54-34, and Alex, 45-39.

“I’m very proud of the efforts of both teams right now. They are getting better each night,” Trent said.

Friday night Wayne hosted Indiahoma. Though the Lady Bulldogs were a bit rusty, according to their coach, they pulled out the win.

Wayne jumped out in front, holding a 28-21 halftime lead.

The Lady Bulldogs added five in the third and 20 in the fourth to finish the game with a win.

Junior Shyleigh Mantooth was the lone Lady Bulldog in double figures with 10 points against Indiahoma.

McKenzie Fisher and Kaylee Madden added nine and seven, respectively.

In fact, nine Lady Bulldogs scratched in the victory.

Saturday afternoon, Wayne beat the Alex Lady Longhorns.

The two teams were pretty evenly matched in the first quarter, Wayne scored six to Alex’s four.

But, Wayne ripped off 17 points in the second quarter to hold a 23-12 lead at the break.

Alex came out of halftime with a hot hand, scoring 16 in the third and 11 in the fourth. But, it wasn’t enough to overcome the lead that the Lady Bulldogs had already built up.

Once again, several girls contributed to the win. Mantooth led all scorers with ten. Fisher and Lorensa Martinez added seven each.

Despite the two wins, Coach Trent knows the girls can increase their offensive output.

“We just aren’t shooting the ball like we should right now,” Trent said.

The Lady Bulldogs will be in Velma-Alma on Tuesday for a regular season game then back on Thursday for their first game of the Velma-Alma tounament. They play Empire at 4 p.m.

The Wayne Bulldogs kicked of their season falling short in their first two games. A 70-49 loss to the Indiahoma Warriors and 58-41 loss to the Alex Longhorns.

Despite Junior Brannon Lewelling’s 29-point night, Wayne was “outmanned” with the Warriors, according to Trent.

Wayne kept pace with Indiahoma in the first quarter, but the Warriors heated up in the second scoring 23 points to Wayne’s eight.

The Warriors’ hot streak continued in the third and Wayne was unable to keep up.

Lewelling led all scorers while Kaleb Madden added seven, Colton Sweetman had five and Jr. Perez and Talon Trent scored four a piece.

Satuday Wayne hosted Alex and fell to the Longhorns, 58-41.

The Bulldogs started slow, scoring 14 through two quarters. Down 15 at the half, Wayne came back strong in the third, scoring 21 and cutting the Alex lead to nine.

But Alex was still hot on offense, adding 12 in the final quarter while Wayne added just six.

The Bulldogs’ scoring was spread through three players. Trent led the team with 18, Lewelling had 13 and Madden had 10.

The Bulldogs are without one of last years’ leading scorers, Ethan Mullins. He is out with an ankle injury. Also out is Andy Lee, with a knee injury. Both are expected to return after Christmas and make an immediate impact.

Wayne was scheduled to travel to Velma-Alma on Tuesday. Then head back to Velma-Alma  on Thursday for the Velma-Alma tournament. They play Walters at 4:30 p.m.
