Two wins in Asher tournament, at ECP on Tuesday

Head coach Nikki Herrin and her Lady Bulldogs were in Fletcher on Monday when the rain came in and canceled their game.

As of presstime, Tuesday’s game with Elmore City was still on.

Late last week, Wayne was on the road for the Asher tournament. They kicked it off with an 8-0 loss to Maysville.

Emily Woody and Allison Ryan accounted for Wayne’s two hits in the loss.

“This team is capable of winning, but they get it in their heads that we can’t beat Maysville,” Herrin said.

Their second game of the tournament was a 10-1 win over Varnum.

According to the coach, Wayne’s bats were hot. They jumped out to an early lead and batted through their lineup.

Energy was high for the Lady Bulldogs in the win.

Wayne had 5 hits led by Faith Brazell’s three. Woody and Ava Stottlemyre each added one.

Brazell was on the rubber for Wayne. She struck out four and gave up just one run on three hits.

Next up was an 11-3 win over Wetumka.

“This was a fun game. The girls were seeing the ball well and had some big hits from Ava, Faith and Emily.

“Ava hit the ball well the whole tournament. She’s been a good bat for us lately.”

Wayne had eight hits and eight RBIs. Freshman Lily Whitaker accounted for six of the ribbies.

Pitching for Wayne was efficient in the win. Brazell and Alyssa Hobson faced 14 batters during the game.

To finish the tournament, Wayne faced Maysville again, falling to the Lady Warriors 11-3.

Jordynn Debaets, Hobson, Woody and Stottlemyre each had a hit.

But, errors plagued the Lady Bulldogs, committing six in the loss.

Last Tuesday, Wayne got a 10-1 win over Central.

“We were really on fire with our bats. Once this team gets on a roll, it’s hard to stop them.

“They show a lot of hustle, especially on the base paths, and that helps to speed up the defense and get on base,” Herrin said.

Wayne had 12 hits in the win.

Brazell led the team with three while Debaets and Stottlemyre each added two. Adams, Woody, Ryan, Hobson and Kaylee Madden had one a piece.

The second inning proved hot for Wayne as they scored nine runs off of six RBIs.

Wayne is scheduled to be in Wynnewood on Thursday and Springer on Friday.
