Funeral services for Jimmie Dale Tompkins, 85, of Purcell will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 23, 2025 at the Wilson-Little Funeral Chapel. Interment will be at the Washington Cemetery under the direction of the Wilson-Little Funeral Home in Purcell.
Mr. Tompkins passed away Saturday, July 19, 2025 at Oklahoma Heart Hospital South.
Born February 1, 1940 in Maysville, Okla., he was the younger of two children born to Martin ‘Mart’ Tompkins and Ruby L. (Allison) Tompkins.
He was raised in Maysville and attended school there. Jimmy was a standout athlete, and a proud member of Maysville’s High School Football team. By chance, on a blind date, he met a young lady from Pauls Valley named Brenda Sue Love. They were the perfect couple and were married in 1960. They lived in various places including Maysville and Moore, later settling in the Purcell/Washington area where they raised their only son, Larry Dale.
Jimmie worked for AC Humpco in Oklahoma City, retiring as a Blending Supervisor after more than 30 years of dedicated service. But farming and training race horses were always in Jimmie’s heart. He and Brenda shared a love of training and working with race horses, and this passion would lead them all over the United States doing what they loved together.
Jimmie worked tirelessly, tending to the day-to-day operations of the farm, caring for his horses and farming. But if you asked him, he would tell you that it was a lifestyle, a seven-day a week opportunity. His drive and competitive nature would lead him well throughout his life, as he was successful in anything he set his mind to.
Above all else, Jimmie was a family man first, and he showed this by being present in all of life’s milestones. He cherished coaching his son and watching him play sports, a love that later extended and was shared to his grandkids and great-grandkids. He very rarely, if ever, missed a ball game or school activity and he was their number one fan. His biggest pride and joy was being called Papa, always giving his grandkids whatever they wanted. He was loved and will be greatly missed.
Jimmie was preceded in death by his wife, Brenda Sue Tompkins; son, Larry Dale Tompkins; his parents, Mart and Ruby Tompkins and his sister, Fay Burgess.
Jimmie is survived by his grandchildren, Jeff Tompkins and wife, Hilary, of Konawa and Jill Lee and husband, Cody, of Tuttle; four great-grandchildren, Jace, Tyson, Hailey and Jaxson, and a host of other family and friends.
