Election Monday with Bobby Bruehl elected Vice Mayor

It was a very busy evening for the Purcell City Council Monday for their regular monthly meeting.

The council voted to remove the interim titles of Mayor and Vice Mayor for Jay Tate and Bobby Bruehl, electing the pair to one year terms for both positions.

The council and a throng of well wishers were on hand for the christening of the newest fire truck for the fire department.

The truck, ordered four years ago, had a hefty price tag of $660,000.

Fire department brass reported if the same truck were to be ordered today, it would cost $1.1 million.

The council and many members of the audience left the Community Room of the Purcell Police Service Building, walking across the parking lot to the fire station for the ceremony that included remarks by former Mayor Graham Fishburn and Fire Chief Greg Cypert, a dedication prayer by Justin Blankenship, a hosing off of the new apparatus and the ceremonial pushing of the new vehicle into the fire house.

Fishburn and long-time city judge Suzanne Woodrow-Snell were both recognized for their service to the community and presented with framed gavels by Tate.

The council approved the 2026-2027 School Resource Officer agreement with the city and the Purcell School District for services of SRO Matt Hains from July 1 through June 30, 2027 and added a special events ordinance to the city’s code of ordinances.

Board members approved the Mayor to sign a contract with SG Wilson Truck & Equipment Co., for the purchase of a 2014 International 7400 6x6 3,000 gallon tanker for $199,500 and tabled a resolution to abolish the cemetery board.

In the PPWA portion of the meeting the trustees approved purchase of an electric department motor for $58,000 and approved water plans for the city to execute an application to ODEQ for Southern Hills Phase 4.

The board approved a GFL CPI 4 percent contractual increase for collection and disposal of solid waste material.

“They have a contractual increase for collection and disposal if diesel prices raise over a certain amount,” interim city manager Bobby Elmore said. “They asked for a temporary 10 percent increase for 120 days, which will be reevaluated at that time.”

The board also talked about a sewer and water increase but took no action.

Elmore said the subject will likely be brought up again at the next monthly meeting.

The PPWA trustees also heard quarterly reports from Wadley’s EMS and Purcell Municipal Hospital, which was partially postponed until a special meeting May 11.
