Healthy Schools Oklahoma (HSOK), led by Bethany Children’s Health Center, presented Purcell Elementary School with the Injury Prevention Award during its recent annual Summer Health Institute luncheon.
The Injury Prevention Award recognizes schools that demonstrate a strong commitment to creating a healthy school environment and supporting the well-being of students, staff, and families.
Katrina Wilkins from Purcell Elementary accepted the award alongside educators and school leaders from across Oklahoma during the annual event, which celebrates schools making a positive impact through health and wellness initiatives.
“Healthy Schools Oklagoma helps students succeed both in and out of the classroom,” said Lindsi Lemons, Healthy Schools Director. “We are proud to recognize Purcell Elementary for its dedication to creating a safe, healthy environment where students have opportunities to learn, grow, and thrive.
“Our Injury Prevention Award honors a school that demonstrates an outstanding commitment to teaching students essential safety skills and empowering them to make healthy, informed choices. Throughout the year, Purcell Elementary provided engaging, hands-on lessons focused on street safety, bike safety, water safety, Halloween safety, physical activity, and the dangers of secondhand smoke.
“A highlight of the year was an interactive street safety unit, where students had the opportunity to practice real-world safety skills in a fun, engaging, and memorable way,” she concluded.
Healthy Schools Oklahoma partners with elementary schools across the state to promote wellness through education, resources and recognition programs.
During the 2026–27 school year, Healthy Schools Oklahoma will work with 82 schools across Oklahoma, providing training, technical assistance and support to help schools strengthen wellness initiatives that encourage physical activity, nutrition, tobacco use prevention, injury prevention, oral health education and other evidence-based practices that improve student success.
The Summer Health Institute provides professional development, networking opportunities, and recognition for educators and school leaders committed to improving the health and well-being of Oklahoma students.
