Washington slow-pitch trying to sweep both seasons

Posted

Tylor Lampkin’s Warriors take the next step today (Thursday) at 1 p.m. on their quest to lock up both the fast-pitch and slow-pitch championships.

Washington hosts a Regional tournament with Calera, Hinton and Valliant coming to town.

“Everybody is going to be good,” Lampkin said.

Valliant arrives as the No. 8 ranked team is Class 4A while Calera is No. 9.

“Valliant is always scrappy and plays the game right. When we played Calera earlier this season neither one of us played good against each other,” Lampkin said. “Hinton comes in under the radar. They’re good enough to be ranked but they’re a little bit of an unknown.”

Washington picked up wins of 15-0 and 17-0 against Riverside in the District tournament.

They also got two key wins on Monday over 5A No. 12 Plainview (11-3) and 5A No. 1 North Rock Creek (23-13).

“We started off a little sluggish then got rolling the last couple innings. It took a little bit to get going because we’ve been off,” Lampkin said. “We finally got back in the groove but we shouldn’t have innings where we don’t score any runs.”

Maggie Place parked a pair of home runs.

Abby Wood hit a triple and the Lucases – Tinley and Emjay – had doubles, with Tinley hitting two.

Against North Rock Creek the Warriors put massive pressure on the Cougars when they opened the first inning with a seven-run barrage.

Washington put up nine runs in the third and seven more in the fifth inning.

“We started hot and there’s been a little rivalry startup with them as many times as we’ve played lately,” Lampkin said. “That’s the best team we’ve played in the last couple of weeks.”

The hot bats included homers from Elly Allison (2), Tinley Lucas, Emjay Lucas, Place (2) and Abby Wood.

They also had doubles from Mikinzy Bost, Ellie Loveless (2), Tinley Lucas, Mattie Richardson, Skylar Wells and Wood (2).

“Our defense was a little better as well,” Lampkin said. “We got solid defense in the infield from Elly Allison, which we always do, and Ellie Loveless and Skylar Wells turned a really good double play.”

The two games were a good transition into the Regional tournament as they try to capture the second softball title of the school year.

“As a team we’ll come together and trust each other and make it fun,” Lampkin said. “Hopefully we’ll come together like we did in the fall.”

Washington is 34-2 this season.
