Washington recorded yet another shutout, waxing Crossings Christian, 49-zip last Friday night in a Halloween trick.
The Warriors did everything but get some candy on the road at Crossings with running backs Javen Hall and Josiah Dickerson combing for 264 yards on the ground.
Hall, who had his best game of the season, carried nine times for 156 yards and four touchdowns on runs of 52, two, 10 and 34.
Dickerson rushed the rock seven times for 130 yards and one 66 yard cross country jaunt to the crib.
Quarterback Kinser Scott tossed a 44-yard touchdown strike to Kade Babcock and Gavin Foster closed the scoring in the third quarter on a one yard plunge.
“Our offense was out the gate against Crossings,” head coach Brad Beller said. “One of the best things about Javen and Josiah is that they both blocked for each other. They both threw key blocks for the other one on all the touchdowns. They understand it’s good for their teammate and ultimately good for the team.
“Our offensive line had another dominating performance,” Beller said of Trip Wilson, Evan Painter, Chance Phillips, Kingston Stringer, Gunnar Baker and Sam Cantrell.
On the other side of the ball, the defense started out rather slowly.
“We gave up a six-minute drive to start the game but ultimately blocked their field goal attempt. Once we came around, we had a really physical game up front and in the secondary.
“Braedon Hutchinson played great at cornerback going against their really good wide receiver,” the coach said.
Also, Henry Mann had a big game in the defensive secondary making four tackles plus two pass deflections.
“It seemed like he was everywhere,” Beller said. “And Blake Heiliger had his best game of the year at his linebacker position.”
Two other defenders that had outstanding games were nose tackle Lane Taylor and linebacker Case Alexander.
“Lane was dominant getting double and triple teamed on every play, yet still had six tackles. Case Alexander had nine tackles, a sack and two tackles for loss,” the coach reported.
The Warriors only played the starters for the first half and then substituted freely.
“Our starting defense held Crossings to zero yards rushing and 50 yards passing,” he said. “Forty of those 50 yards came on their first drive.”
The District Championship is at stake on Friday night at Reed Field when Lindsay’s Leopards come to town. Kick off is set for 7 p.m.
Lindsay and Marlow are tied for second place in the district race both with 4-1 district records. A Warrior victory would break up a three-way log jam at the top of District 2A-2.
The Leopards operate out of the spread on offense and base their defense out of 3-4.
“The thing that is most impressive with them is how big and strong they are up front. Even in the Marlow game and the scrimmage with Sulphur they held their own up front,” Beller noted.
“In addition to being very formidable up front, they do a good job of getting their athletes out in space. They like to run and then try to throw it deep. When they establish the run, it sets up the pass.
“Their defense is physical a throw back to the days of old with Lindsay. They hit you and run to the ball. They swarm on defense.”
Beller said his team will have to control their emotions.
“Not many teams get to play in a district championship game. We have to control our emotions and be disciplined throughout the whole game,” Beller concluded.
Warrior notes:
Head coach Brad Beller nominated Javen Hall as the Offensive Player of the Week. Hall had nine carries for 156 yards and four touchdowns.
Beller nominated Gunnar Baker as the Offensive Lineman of the Week. He graded out at 91 percent against Crossings.
Lane Taylor got the nod as the Defensive Lineman of the Week. Despite fighting double and triple teams he finished with six tackles against the Knights.
Case Alexander was nominated as the Defensive Player of the Week for his nine tackles, one quarterback sack and one tackle for a loss last Friday night.
