Mike Coker, a retired Oklahoma firefighter and Lexington resident, spent years protecting his community. Now, the Coker family is turning to the community for help with a different type of fight: a battle with cancer.

Coker is now fighting cancer a second time after being diagnosed with stage IV Leiomyosarcoma.

This comes after he fought stage IV colon cancer and went into remission two years ago.

After research, Mike and his wife, Tammi, are now hoping to get treatment in Mexico that would have less severe side effects, but is not covered by insurance. A GoFundMe was set up to help the Cokers obtain the potentially life-saving treatment.

“Mike and Tammi have both given so much to their community for decades. As a firefighter for 34 years, Mike put his life on the line for others on a daily basis. He was one of the first responders at the Murrah Bombing in 1995 and volunteered countless hours beyond his normal shift and later ran in the Memorial Marathon in remembrance of that horrific event in Oklahoma history. He has volunteered with Fill the Boot to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, volunteered with little league teams and his church’s children’s RA programs,” the GoFundMe reads.
