Freshman Sessions grappling with sport

Posted

Coty Sessions is the only wrestler at Purcell High School.

She started wrestling two years ago when she was tired of her brothers being the only wrestlers in the family.

Her parents talked her into going to her first tournament. She was hooked after she won first place.

Acknowledging that wrestling is a tough sport, Sessions says it pushes her to be mentally strong. She mentions that wrestling has taught her many life lessons, one of them being that she should leave her wins and losses on the mat.

Sessions attributes her success to her strength. She likes the idea of being able to physically defend herself. By staying humble and having confidence, she can be cool, calm, and collected when competing.

In the future, Coty plans to get a scholarship to play softball and wrestling. Sessions encourages people, specifically girls, to start wrestling. Wrestling was not a sport that was common for girls to participate in, but now there are more opportunities.

Last year was the first year that OSSAA had a girls division in the State championships.

Sessions takes her inspiration from female wrestlers who could not compete due to their gender, such as her coach, Shelby Morrison. Sessions states her goal is to complete what her coach began. This is what motivates her.
