Focused on playoffs

Warrior softball team determined to leave legacy

Posted

The Washington Warrior slow-pitch softball team had a less hectic week after a stretch where they played 20 games in 14 days.

They picked up two wins on Thursday against Mangum (16-4) and Davis (10-2) as they prepare for the State playoffs.

They also got wins on Monday over larger schools, Southmoore (21-5), Mustang (10-7) and Tulsa Union (9-4).

Tinley Lucas was on fire in the Mangum game. The junior went 3-3 at the plate with two home runs, a double and knocked in eight batters. She also scored three runs.

Elly Allison also homered and doubled. She went 3-3 with two ribbies of her own.

The Warriors scored four runs in the first inning before blowing the game open with 11 runs in the second of the three-inning affair.

The Warriors received good news when senior outfielder Mattie Richardson was cleared to play before the Mangum game. She had been sidelined with an injury since basketball season ended. The veteran will be a helper in the playoffs.

Head coach Tylor Lampkin said the team is highly focused right now.

“This bunch is real determined to be one of the teams to come through Washington who have won both fast and slow pitch championships,” he said.

In their win against Davis the Warriors got another home run from Lucas, while Allison, Ellie Loveless (2) and Abby Wood all had doubles.

A six-run third inning proved to be the difference maker against the Wolves.

Putting it together

Washington played in a festival on Monday and took wins while playing some of their best softball to date.

“We’re trying to get where the offense and defense can go at the same time. We had a good game against Southmoore,” Lampkin confirmed. “We put up runs and played defense and it was a complete game. We’ll try to build off of that and do it as we go through the playoffs.”

Southmoore saw the ball leave the park off the bats of Allison (2), Lucas (2), Emjay Lucas (2) and Maggie Place – who had a grand slam.

The Warriors played a clean game defensively with no errors.

Mustang was the next team to fall and the offensive services of Lucas and Lucas – a home run apiece – helped move the game in Washington’s favor.

Finally, they beat Tulsa Union in a 9-4 final.

Allison, Tinley Lucas and Skylar Wells all went yard in the game.

Haven Brewer tripled as all Warrior runs were scored in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.

Playoffs

Washington began their playoff season with a District tournament against Riverside on Wednesday at 2 p.m.

“This team wants to leave their own legacy,” Lampkin said. “We’re focused to give ourselves the opportunity to be one of the great teams to come through here.”

Washington is 30-2.
