A fiery three-vehicle traffic accident on US-177 at Summerwood Lane, just north of Asher, in Pottawatomie County June 23 claimed the life of a Yukon man.

According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, Adam Caldwell, 39, of Yukon was driving a 2016 Ford Transit Connect on 177 when his vehicle was struck by a 1994 Peterbilt dump truck, driven by Dorian Flores, 41, of Wanette.

The OHP reported the Peterbilt was southbound on 177 following a 2023 Subaru Crosstrek, driven by Jennifer Appicello, 54 of Shawnee, and another vehicle.

The Subaru was attempting to make a left turn and had stopped to wait for northbound traffic. The unidentified vehicle passed the Subaru on the right shoulder, investigating OHP Trooper Eric Smith said.

The Peterbilt attempted to stop and entered a broad slide crossing both the north and southbound lanes, striking the Ford and rotating 1/4 times coming to rest on its right side facing north and blocking both lanes of travel.

The Subaru departed the roadway to the right and came to rest in the west ditch facing west.

The Ford came to rest in the east shoulder facing northwest. After the collision, both the Ford and Peterbilt caught fire, Smith reported.

Trooper Smith said both Flores and Appicello were also injured in the accident.

The accident, that occurred at 1:24 p.m., remains under investigation, according to the OHP.
