Experience key for Wayne

Bulldogs host Springer in season opener Friday night

Wayne graduate Jackson Embry begins his third season leading his alma mater’s basketball team.

Last season Wayne finished with a 12-15 record. Gone from that squad are Kaleb Madden, Taylen Bryant and Colton Sweetman.

Despite losing a four-year starter in Madden, Embry is excited about the experience he is bringing back.

“We have good experience. The guys have the knowledge and know what I expect. There’s a buzz around the locker room,” Embry said.

Returning players that Embry expects to comprise his starting five are seniors Wyatt Webster and Bradey VanSchuyver, juniors Jaxon Dill and Ty Kemp and sophomore Ben Fischer. Senior Logan Taylor will also vy for a starting spot, according to Embry.

Several other guys are in the mix, including senior Ashton Norton, sophomores Cameron Davis, Sloan Jackson and Max McGlory and freshman Ryli Taylor. Embry expects them to see minutes off the bench.

“We’ll rely on experience a lot this year. The guys have the skills and knowledge. This is the best group I’ve had so far.”

As the Bulldogs kick off their season, Embry believes that his teams’ lack of post play is the biggest weakness to overcome.

“We’ve lost a couple guys for one reason or another and will have to develop Jaxon and Ty for the post this season,” Embry said.

But, he’s especially proud of the group’s chemistry.

“These guys know each other and they find time to do stuff together outside of school and school ball. They play well off of each other; they’re a tight knit group,” Embry said.

Wayne will host Springer on Friday at 6:30 p.m. to open their season.

“We’re all anticipating the Springer game. That’s a game we felt like we should have won last year, so it should be competitive. It’ll be a great home opener for us.”
