The Washington baseball program has solidly staked its claim as one of the all-time baseball dynasties in the state of Oklahoma.
Washington won its fifth consecutive State crown after they defeated Marlow 9-4 on Saturday.
“It’s a testament to how tough our kids are,” said Warrior head coach Brad Lucas. “The foundation that has been set here has put us in a position that it’s what we expect to do. And that’s what we did.”
Dewey
The Warriors defeated Dewey 8-2 in the opening round of the State tournament.
Owen Andrews got the nod as the game-one starter and struck out 12 batters through six innings and pitched an absolute gem.
“Owen was a dude on the mound,” Lucas said. “He controlled the game from the start until the seventh when his pitch count started getting a little high.”
Liam Keltner came on in relief and put away the last two batters.
Washington jumped out to an early lead after they scored three runs in the second inning.
Jack Brady got the scoring started in the game. He went 3-4 and also had an RBI.
Jackson Mays was 1-2 with a walk and two RBIs. He hit a solo home run in the third inning.
Davis
The Warriors defeated Davis 15-13 in the semi-final game.
They got off to a fast start with a seven-run first inning.
Davis hung around and made a late charge in the seventh inning but the Warriors were able to hold on.
“Davis may be one of the best hitting squads we faced all year,” said Lucas. “We just had to outlast them.”
The Warriors had 14 hits in the game and Lucas said his offense was rolling for all three games of the tournament.
“We hit the homers, but more impressive were the doubles we hit into the gaps,” he said. And the base hits. They just kept coming. We continuously applied pressure on the other teams.”
Liam Keltner and Dawson Thomas both had home runs in the game.
Thomas was 1-3 with a walk and two ribbies, while Keltner went 3-5 with three RBIs.
Yariel Bello went 2-4 with two double and a pair of RBIs.
Spencer Barton got the start on the mound and had four strikeouts. Keltner relieved him and struck out three.
Marlow
Washington defeated Marlow in the finals, 9-4.
The Warriors again got out to a hot start and led 4-0 after the first inning.
“We jumped out and hit it and we executed,” Lucas said. “Through all three games our offensive production was impressive. We had fast starts and that always gives a little relief to our pitchers.”
The Warriors went with the surprise pick of Tucker Myers to start the first game and the senior did not disappoint.
“I and my staff, who I rely heavily on, put a plan together and rolled the dice and it paid off,” Lucas said. ‘He had been a part of State tournaments before and we knew the pressure wouldn’t be too much for him.”
Lucas said his coaching staff played a huge part in their success in the tournament.
“We rolled into State and my staff had unbelievable game plans for each team,’ he said. “They had done a ton of homework and we were prepared. It just made the tournament so enjoyable.”
Myers struck out two batters over six innings of work. He allowed four runs and had no walks.
Mays closed the last inning.
Offensively, Andrews was 3-4 and scored three times.
Rico was 2-4 with a double and had two RBIs.
Zeke Wilson was 1-3 with a walk and had a couple RBIs as well.
In the three game stretch the Warriors had 33 hits.
“We didn’t have a hole anywhere in our lineup during the entire tournament,” Lucas said. “They all hammered the baseball and it was a total team effort.”
Lucas said his group of seniors was special from not only an athletic side, but their leadership over the course of the season.
“This senior class in unbelievable,” he said. “I’m going to miss seeing them play.”
The seniors are Liam Keltner, Dawson Thomas, Tucker Myers, Kinser Scott, Zeke Wilson, Jackson Rico, Spencer Barton, Johnathen Montoya and Owen Andrews.
“It still hasn’t sunk in yet that it’s five in a row,” Lucas said. “It was so fun.”
Washington finished with a 33-7 record.
