Dragons hike record to 4-1

Posted

With three victories last week, Purcell ran its basketball season mark to 4-1.

The only blemish on the Dragons schedule is a 50-36 setback to Weatherford in the CCS Tournament last weekend.

Purcell dusted Davis earlier last week, 56-28 behind Nate Willis’ 17 points. Jorge Munoz added 11 points in the paint against the Wolves.

Purcell started the tournament last Thursday with a 62-42 smoking of CCS JV.

Mojo Browning led all scorers with 19 points. Joining him in double figures were Misael Duque with 14 and Willis with 10.

In the semifinals they ran into the Eagles who limited Purcell to just 10 second half points.

Browning canned three treys in the game on his way to an 18 point outing. He made seven of the 10 second half points.

The Dragons bounced back to pin a 40-37 loss on Pauls Valley.

Munoz, Lincoln Eubank and Browning paced the Dragons with eight points each in the low scoring affair.

“Only one team can claim three wins in a tournament so everyone else is fighting to come out with two,” head coach Roger Raper said.

“We were able to get that done. Not having a summer schedule this year has us behind in our development as a team. It is coming together just slower than years past,” he continued.

“Summer time play is so important to growth of a team and the chemistry of a team. We are just now being able to learn  how to play as a unit and understanding our strengths and weaknesses.

“I have seen some really nice things from this group and feel confident we will continue to grow, especially as our younger kids get more experience and the game slows down for them,” Raper concluded.

Coach David Sikes’ Dragons are 1-4 after posting a 48-30 victory over CCS in the opening round of the tournament.

Kora Keith led all scorers in the game with 15 that included two buckets from downtown. Right on her heels was Leslie Thompson who cut the strings for 14 points.

Purcell jumped out to a 9-4 lead in the first quarter and padded that lead to 20-13 by halftime.

The Dragons came up short against Davis earlier in the week and to Pauls Valley and Noble in the tournament.

“This team has worked hard all off season,” Sikes said. “We are still trying to find our identity right now.

“We have to focus more on our strengths and continue to improve our weaknesses,” the coach said.

Purcell was to play Lindsay Tuesday night to close out the pre-holiday portion of their schedule.
