Purcell’s fast-pitch softball team went 2-2 last week defeating Harrah and Cushing while dropping contests to Newcastle and Lone Grove.
The 2-1 victory over Harrah was in dramatic fashion when Mack McKay tripled in the winning run in the bottom of the eighth.
Junior Ava Sparks, who was the winning pitcher, helped her own cause singling in a run in the bottom of the first frame.
Sparks was strong in the circle fanning seven Panthers. She scattered seven hits over the eight innings of play.
Harrah tied the game in the top of the fifth.
Purcell out-hit Harrah 9-7.
Sophomore Kami Rendon had two of Purcell’s hits in a 2-3 performance. She led the offense while the Dragon defenders didn’t make a single error in the contest.
The Dragons picked up a back-to-back victory downing Cushing the next day, 9-4.
Cushing drew first blood pushing across a run in their half of the first frame.
That lead was short-lived when Purcell exploded for five runs in the bottom of the second. Sophomore Kendra Anderson’s triple with the bases juiced was the big blow of the frame.
Purcell added a pair of runs in the bottom of the third when sophomore Miaca Martinez and Rendon both tallied.
Anderson started in the circle for the Dragons. Sparks came in to relieve her in the sixth inning.
KK Vazquez’s 2-4 outing at the plate led the offense. She swiped a pair of bases in the game as the team stole six all together.
In a make up game with Newcastle September 10, the Racers jumped out to a lead in the third frame and defeated Purcell, 7-2.
Newcastle out-hit the Dragons 10-5.
Purcell hosted Lone Grove last Thursday and came up on the short end of a 8-0 count.
Anderson took the loss in the circle.
Vazquez, Martinez and Sparks all had hits for the Dragons.
Purcell was scheduled to travel to Newcastle Tuesday, host Seminole on Thursday and host Perkins next Monday. They are back on the road next Tuesday with a date with Washington.
