District foe Lindsay is here Friday

Purcell played a lot of players in their 48-7 victory at Crooked Oak last Friday night.

Head coach Aaron Dillard started subbing in the second quarter and reserves played the entire second half.

As a team, Purcell rushed for 365 led by Kash Guthmueller and Boston Knowles.

Guthmueller ran the rock seven times for 117 yards and three touchdowns while Knowles  carried the ball six times for 116 yards and a touchdown.

“Any time you rush for that many yards it’s obvious your offensive line has done a good job,” Dillard said.

He was praising the play of Brody Holder, Gunner Baker, Carter Goldston, Derek Cravens, Landry Bacon, Brian Bernal and Payton Rivera.

Dillard also pointed to the play of Oscar Wren who had 79 receiving yards.

“We had young guys play well on both sides of the ball both at receiver and in the secondary,” Dillard said.

Colt Taylor picked off the first pass of the night on the game’s first play, setting the defensive tone. Jonathan Minor also had a turnover recovering a Ruf-Nex fumble.

“And Boston Knowles continues to get better and better at outside linebacker,” the coach said. “Jonathan Minor and Tavian Engert both played well for us defensively,” Dillard said. “Tavian is consistently really, really good for us week in and week out.”

The Dragons have a key district game here Friday night when the 3-1 Lindsay Leopards come to town for a 7 p.m. kickoff at Conger Field.

The Leopards and Dragons are both 3-1 and both teams lost their games with Pauls Valley.

“Lindsay is really good,” Dillard reports. They are a big, physical team that tries to impose their will on you. That’s their mantra. They have three or four really good backs.

“But if you force their hand they can throw,” the coach continued. “It going to be a really good challenge for us. They are very similar to Pauls Valley on both sides of the ball. It’s definitely going to be a challenge.”

Dillard said a key for the Dragons will be getting lined up correctly on defense and making tackles.

“They run through a lot of tackles. We’ve got to gang tackle. If we do that we should be fine. We’ve got a lot of team speed and run to the ball.

“Offensively we’re going to do what we do and try to establish the run. We have to be patient, take care of the ball and block them up front,” he concluded.

Dragon notes:

Purcell Head Coach Aaron Dillard nominated Kash Guthmueller as the Offensive Player of the Week for his 7 carry 117 yard rushing night that included a trio of touchdowns. He also was 1-1 passing for 40 yards.

Dillard nominated Brody Holder as the Offensive Lineman of the Week. He graded out at 75 percent.

Jonathan Minor finished with five tackles including two for losses and recovered a fumble. He was the nominee for Defensive Lineman of the Week.

Nominated for Defensive Player of the Week was Colt Taylor who had an interception and four tackles.
