Dragons can’t put Chicks away

A pair of two-run losses put a close to 2026 season

Purcell started off the Regional Tournament at Chickasha like their pants were on fire, run-ruling Ardmore 13-0 and knocking off the host Fighting Chicks and their ace hurler Brody Ross, 4-3.

But a pair of two-run losses to the Chicks to close out the tournament ended Purcell’s season at 24-9.

“We just had too many mistakes to finish Chickasha off to advance,” head coach Cole Sharp said.

“But, overall I am so proud of the way we battled throughout the Regional and also during the season.

“We competed and played well throughout the majority of the season.  We finished the season on a 13 game winning streak into the Regional Tournament finishing the year with the most wins in a season in a decade at Purcell.

Sharp called the season one of the most fun years of his coaching career.

“We will bring back a lot of guys for next year,” Sharp continued. “We will  lose four seniors  Caleb Williams, Bryce Blair, Carter Bennett and Deaken Dobbins.  I am excited for our future here.”

Purcell rocketed out of the first inning against Ardmore scoring nine times before finally making the third out and the rout was on.

Layton Percey was the big stick going 2-3 including a double and finished with three RBIs. Bryce Blair had a three-run double in the contest.

Four Ardmore pitchers issued nine walks.

Blair also pocketed the pitching victory, striking out three in five innings of work.

“I thought Bryce started the game really dialed in,” Sharp confirmed.

Dobbins was the hero both on the mound and with his bat in the 4-3 victory over Chickasha.

He scattered five hits and fanned seven in six innings. Preston Kane came in for the save retiring the side in the top of the seventh.

Hitting wise it was a battle and Chickasha had a guy (Brody Ross) that threw 92 m.p.h. and that was a challenge,” the coach said. “We came through and made him throw his pitch count.

The hosts brought in a new hurler and that’s where Deaken came through.

Dobbins walked it off with a base hit up the middle scoring two runs and won the game.

Chickasha came back to win game three, 6-4.

The Dragons were plagued by the error bug in the season ending 8-6 loss.

Cooper Selman led the offense going 2-2 and scored three times.

“We had some chances to break it open but couldn’t  get the timely hits,” Sharp said.
