Dragons advance to Regional

Dispatch Luther with good pitching and defense

Propelled by solid pitching and a pair of big four-run innings, Purcell dispatched Luther 4-3 and 5-1 to snare the District Championship and advance to the Regional Tournament.

Senior Nate Willis mowed down the Lions striking out 10 and tossing a complete game.

“Nate had a great game pitching,” head coach Cole Sharp said. “Luther hit him early but Nate got stronger as the game went along. He competed all the way until the end.”

Willis scattered five hits and helped his own cause going 2-4 at the plate in the leadoff spot.

Sophomore Jett Tyler had a clutch two-run double in the fourth inning when the Dragons scored all four of their runs.

“Nate had a good day at the plate and Jett Tyler came up clutch once again getting the two RBI hit to give us the lead,” Sharp said.

Sharp said, “the Luther pitcher, Braden Browning threw 82-84 m.p.h. and did a good job through four innings to keep us off balance.

“We started to hit him in the fifth and sixth innings. And, we played good defense to help secure the win.”

Junior Zach Idlett threw a complete game in the nightcap striking out five and giving up five hits.

Willis was 2-3 with a triple and an RBI in the game. Idlett went 2-3 with an RBI. Logan Roberts smacked a two-run double in the sixth.

“I thought Zach threw his best game of the season and that’s what we need out of him,” Sharp said. “He had them off balance all day and did an awesome job of attacking the strike zone.

“Overall, I was pleased with our effort all day,” the coach said. “We played outstanding defense and had great pitching and that’s what we need during the playoffs which will carry us a long way.”

Purcell will travel to Oklahoma Christian for the Regional Thursday and Friday. The Dragons are 19-9 heading into the Regional.
