Purcell had a good week on the softball diamond going 4-1 and finished runners-up in the annual Heart of Oklahoma Tournament.
In the tournament, the Dragons knocked off Washington, 3-2, Cache, 4-3 and Bridge Creek, 6-2 in extra innings before narrowly losing to Blanchard in the finals, 6-5.
Back on August 18 Purcell rode the pitching arm of freshman Taryn Knowles, who struck out 15 Tigers and only issued one walk in 113 pitches.
Freshman Kyleigh Reinhold went a perfect 4-4 at the plate while fellow frosh KiKi Waterman had two runs batted in. Knowles and Jaycee Holman both went 1-2.
Head coach Jason Tompkins reported his club, “played really good defense in their 3-2 victory to start the HOOT over Washington.
Knowles scattered five hits while striking out five.
Sophomore Kyndall Williams paced the offense with a 2-3 outing. Gracie Powell, Brielle Gardner, Ava Sparks and Kendra Anderson all went 1-2 in the game.
“We played great defense and Knowles had a great game in the circle,” Tompkins said.
Sparks tossed BBs in the 4-3 victory over Cache. She scattered six hits while fanning a pair of Bulldogs.
“Our offense took over to help Ava out,” Tompkins said.
Knowles and Holman both were 2-2 with doubles. Waterman also swatted a double in the game.
Anderson fanned seven Bobcats in the extra inning victory over Bridge Creek. She gave up five hits and walked a pair of hitters.
Waterman and Knowles were both 2-4 at the plate while Reinhold and Powell were 1-3. Knowles smacked a pair of doubles in the contest. Waterman also had a double.
In the finals, Purcell out-hit Blanchard 10-7 with Knowles taking the pitching loss despite a pair of strikeouts.
Miaca Martinez and Waterman were both 2-2 in the game while Reinhold was 2-3 with a triple. Anderson, Holmes, Sparks and Knowles all had a hit.
“We are playing well,” the coach said. “We just need to be more consistent on defense.”
Purcell was scheduled to play at Perkins August 25 and at Tuttle September 1.
The Dragons are 8-4 on the season.
