Purcell boys and girls pin losses on Bridge Creek, Marlow

Matt Lohn’s Dragons played perhaps their most complete game of the season in a 64-41 take down of Bridge Creek at home February 3.

Drew Blair led the Dragons with 14 points with Kyeston Martin also finishing in double digits with 11.

Purcell built a 32-20 lead at intermission and padded it in the second half for the 17-point victory.

“We played extremely well in almost all facets of the game. On offense, we stayed within ourselves and usually found the best opportunities. I was especially pleased with how we found each other in advantages,” Lohn said.

“Our defensive intensity led to the aggressive approach on the other end, as we were able to run back at them for some easy points in transition. This was an identity game for us. We leaned on our defense and allowed it to create offense. I think we are best in that mode, and my guys have slowly bought into that throughout the season. It’s important for them to see their buy-in and hard work lead to this type of performance.

“My hope is that we continue to put water in that bucket with each rep, possession and game to finish the regular season,” the coach said.

Purcell turned around Saturday for a prolonged Outlaw football season make up game.

Purcell hung on for a 43-39 victory against an always tough Outlaw team at home.

“Marlow is well coached, physical and it is always tough to play at their place,” Lohn said.

“They came out in zone and it challenged us. Then, they attacked our guards with their size advantage on the other end, going to the low block for some early success,” Lohn said.

Balanced scoring helped the Dragon cause with Jaime Resendiz pouring in 10 in the paint while Alex Rojo and Kyeston Martin finished with nine apiece.

“We didn’t panic and showed some real grit as we navigated ways to limit their size advantage,” Lohn continued.

“I was happy to see our progression in how we attacked the zone. In the second half, we still struggled to make shots early and I think our defensive energy waned a bit in response.

“However, we were finally able to knock the lid off the cup in the last quarter, hitting four-threes that created a 37-29 advantage with less than two minutes to go. That and the turnovers we created with our half court trap, turned the game in our direction.

Marlow is a lot like us in that they don’t quit, so they made one final push. A mental mistake on a baseline out of bounds and us not diving for loose balls led to two made triples, cutting our lead to two with 35 seconds left. A couple of made free throws and a clutch put back allowed us to make it out of town with the win. It was a gutsy performance,” Lohn concluded.

The Dragons were 14-6 heading into Tuesday’s home contest with Pauls Valley.

Coach Toney Cooper’s Dragons expanded on a eight point halftime lead to post a 43-29 victory on the Bobcats, led by Lili Del Toro’s 11 points.

The senior cut the strings for a trio of treys while Ali Brady was right on her heels with 10 points.

“Our team has seen so much adversity this season,” Cooper said.

“Replacing two starters over the past few weeks has just added to it. Our kids have responded so well. We came out of the gate with good intensity which allowed for us to have a strong first quarter.

“Halle Buchanan had a solid game grabbing 13 boards. We played a good game and I’m hoping we can carry this momentum forward,” Cooper said.

The Dragons backed up the Bridge Creek victory with a road win at Marlow Saturday night in a make up from January 27.

Purcell topped the Outlaws 46-43 behind the team high 15 by Buchanan.

“We started a little sluggish but was able to keep the deficit below 10 for the first quarter. Lyric Harding played stellar defense over the next two quarters neutralizing their best player and allowing us to continue to climb back into it,” Cooper said.

“Halle Buchanan had a solid game. She got stronger with every quarter,” Cooper continued.

Buchanan added a dozen rebounds to go with her 15 points for a double-double.

She made a living at the charity stripe canning nine of 11 attempts. Vazquez was a perfect six for six.

“What was really good for us is that we got to the line 27 times, we were aggressive and it showed,” the coach said.

As a team, Purcell nailed 21 of their 27 free throw attempts, which was a huge part of their victory.

Purcell also had half as many turnovers as Marlow with 11.

“Taygan Winters hit a big shot down the stretch and followed it with a key defensive play to seal the win. This was such a good growth game. We have been in close games, it was good to climb back and finish with a win,” Cooper concluded.

The girls hiked their season record to 8-12 heading into Tuesday’s home game with Pauls Valley.

After Pauls Valley will be a home game Thursday night with Chickasha and the Dragons host Marlow Saturday afternoon.

There will be no junior varsity games.

The girls will tip off at 3 p.m. with the boys following at 4:30 p.m.

Next Tuesday night will be senior night when Lindsay comes to town.
