An 18-month-old child was bitten by the family’s dog just after 5 p.m. May 7 in Byars but is expected to make a full recovery in an Oklahoma City hospital.

McClain County Sheriff Deputies responded to a residence on Johnsonville Avenue at 5:10 p.m. when the dog attack occurred.

The family transported the child to Mercy Hospital Emergency Room in Ada where medical staff decided to have the child transported by helicopter to OU Children’s Hospital in Oklahoma City for further treatment.

Doctors determined there was no structural damage. The child was treated for lacerations to the face and head.

The family put the animal down at the scene. The sheriff’s department transported the remains to the custody of the Oklahoma State Department of Health for further investigation.

The animal is believed to be current on all its shots.
