District title on the Line

Posted

Washington will be playing for the out-right district championship when it hosts Christian Heritage Academy Friday night at 7 p.m.

The Warriors, 8-1 overall, bring a 4-0 district record into the contest while CHA is 6-3 overall and 5-1 in district.

CHA’s lone league setback came at the hands of CCS so a CHA victory over Washington would leave a three-way tie for the title.

Friday night’s contest is also Little League Appreciation night. Little Leaguers will get to run onto the field with the Warriors and each team will be recognized at halftime.

The Crusaders operate out of a spread on offense and are a quick hitting team.

“They can score very, very quickly,” Washington Head Coach Brad Beller said. “They have several weapons including two very tall wide receivers.

“One of them is 6’5” so they stretch your defense leaving your front seven vulnerable. It makes it harder to bring pressure because you have to pay so much attention to the wide receivers,” Beller continued.

Beller noted the Crusaders are “very well coached” in the offensive line.

On defense CHA operates out of a 3-3 stack but are very multiple.

They move their front around and their linebackers around making you guess where they’re coming from,” the coach said. “They are a bend but don’t break type of defense. They’re not huge up front but they try to get penetration to stop your run game before it gets started.”

Since Washington’s game with Crooked Oak was cancelled due to COVID issues at Crooked Oak, Washington’s coaching staff split up with some scouting the Marlow-Frederick game and some scouting the Holdenville-CHA match up.

“Sometimes you get a better feel for a team by watching them play in person as opposed to just film,” Beller said.

The Crooked Oak cancellation was the second district game of the season for the Warriors with Holdenville being the other one.
