It wasn’t the start new Lexington High softball coach Katelynn Lewis was looking for, but there’s still plenty of time to turn things around.
Lewis’ fast-pitch team opened the season with a 12-2 road loss to Prague on Aug. 10, followed by an 8-3 home loss to Holdenville on Monday.
“Losses are tough to face, but each game I see so many positives,” she told The Register. “We are meshing more as a team and have greater takeaways. I am also starting to see the fight or “grit” in our girls more and more.”
Lexington managed just four hits against Prague, one each by Charlie Ross, Alaysha Hinds, Peyton Harmon and Tia Peery, who also knocked in a run with a fifth inning double.
Freshman Bryn Easom had the other RBI.
Sophomore Emma Garrett went the distance, surrendering nine hits and 12 runs, including six runs in the sixth inning.
She threw 109 pitches.
Lexington kept it closer against Holdenville, but the Lady Wolverines broke a 1-1 tie in the third inning with two runs against Garrett, who went the distance.
Holdenville pushed across two runs in the fifth innings and three in the seventh off Garrett, who pitched a complete game with seven strikeouts.
The Lady Dawgs scored twice in the bottom of the seventh when Hinds and Harmon scored on a single by Marleigh Givens.
Peery drove in the other run for Lexington, and Gracie White doubled twice.
The early showing should come as no surprise since Lewis inherited a team that graduated seven seniors from a team that won 22 games and a Regional title last season.
The coach is interested in seeing daily improvement from her players at this point.
“We have shuffled some players around the last few games, so as a team we are finally falling into a consistent groove, and I look forward to it going up from here,” she said.
Next up for the Lady Dawgs is the Stratford Tournament on Thursday through Saturday.
“My main thing is looking forward to them starting the game hitting,” Lewis said. “Our bats have been slow to come around each game. We need to start games attacking the ball instead of waiting until later in the game to turn it on.”
