The Bulldogs’ baseball team continues to roll, winning four of their last five games by a combined score of 45 to 18.
But it was Lexington’s lone loss between March 23-28 — a 9-0 “clunker” to nemesis Purcell — that sticks in coach Matt Dierking’s craw.
“We did not play very well at all,” he told The Register.
Lexington pitchers walked seven batters and hit two others, allowing Purcell to continue its mastery of the Bulldogs.
“I don’t think we’ve beaten them since 2019,” Dierking said.
The loss spoiled an otherwise solid week of baseball for Lexington (12-3) that started with district wins over Marietta by scores of 7-0 on March 23 and 16-0 on Senior Night (March 24).
Caydn Krueger hit a grand slam to punctuate the second game and Cameron Haley drove in two runs. James McMillan and Cody Rollins allowed just three hits over five innings, when the game was called.
The Bulldogs bounced back from the loss to Purcell on Thursday at the Dibble Tournament with wins over Sterling on Friday and Vanoss on Saturday to claim the consolation championship.
In the 17-6 win over Sterling, Krueger had three hits, including a home run and a double, to go with five RBIs while Haley had two hits and knocked in four runs. McMillan and Haley also homered for the Bulldogs.
Lexington jumped out to a 5-0 against Vanoss, scoring one in the first, three in the third and one in the fifth. Colby Haynes pitched 6.1 innings, allowing five hits and two earned runs. He walked five and struck out six.
Haley, Rollins, Haynes, Rhydon Foutch and Cash Dierking each drove in a run for the Bulldogs.
