Spring is just around the calendar corner. But don’t bother looking for a redbud tree in bloom or shadings of new green  lining tree branches,

There is one reliable indicator, however.

And that is the McClain County Spring Livestock Show.

This year’s show opens today (Thursday) in the McClain County Expo Center.

Added to the standard classes will be a doe fitting and cattle fitting contests.

Judging of the sheep show will lead off the competition at 110:30 a.m.

Classes include pee wee, breeding ewes, market ewe lambs, market wether lambs and showmanship.

Next up will be the market goat show at 12:30 p.m. with pee wee, doe kid, wether goats and showmanship.

The doe fitting contest will follow the judging of the market goats.

Arena action will resume at 10:30 a.m. Friday with a cattle show class lineup that includes pee wee, heifers, prospect steers, market steers and showmanship.

Following those will be the cattle fitting contest.

Poultry will be the next to undergo a judge’s scrutiny at 10 a.m. Saturday.

A swine show at 10:30 a.m. will feature classes for pee wee, breeding gilts, commercial gilts, barrows and showmanship.

Closing out the show will be a rabbit show at 11 a.m.

On Saturday evening the focus will switch to the 52nd annual Purcell Livestock Show.

Judging will begin at 7 a.m.

The Purcell bonus auction will get underway at 6 p.m. February 24 at the high school’s Ag Ed Building.
