Cole, Lucas to be chairmen

Posted

The shift in power of the House of Representatives means a monumental shift in the power of the Oklahoma Delegation including our very own congressman Tom Cole.

Cole is in line to assume the chairmanship of the powerful Rules Committee.

Couple that with him being the senior member of the Appropriations Committee where he will have extensive clout.

But Cole isn’t the only Oklahoma Congressman set to chair a House Committee.

Third District Congressman Frank Lucas, who led the Agriculture Committee from 2011 to 2014 and helped write a farm bill whose main principals remain in effect, is now in line to take over the Science, Space and Technology Committee.

Lucas is expected to take over that committee in January. It oversees NASA, the National Science Foundation, the National Weather Service and several other agencies.

If they are elevated to those two posts it will be the first time in history that two Oklahomans lead U.S. House committees at the same time.

Cole’s long tenure will provide him with a strong policy voice.

He has been in congress since 2003.

Lucas has been serving in the house even longer having first stepped into the chamber in 1994.

Back then he was representing the old Oklahoma sixth district.

Hopefully the two leaders will be in positions to help not only the country but Oklahoma as well.
