City election set

Filings open December 5-7

Posted

Candidates for the City of Purcell primary election will file Declarations of Candidacy beginning 8 a.m. December 5.

Karen Haley, secretary of the McClain County Election Board, said Declaration of Candidacy forms must be completed and submitted to the County Election Board no later than 5 p.m. December 7.

The filing will be for Division 1, a 3-year term.

That is the seat presently held by Mayor Graham Fishburn.

The deadline to contest a candidacy is December 9. Haley said such contests may only be filed by another candidate for the office.

If more than two candidates file for office, a primary election will be February 14.

A candidate who receives more than 50 percent of the vote will be the winner.

However, if no candidate receives that majority, the two candidates with the greatest number of vote will advance to the general election on April 4.

In the event there are only two candidates filing for the position, that race will appear on the April 4 ballot.

Declaration of Candidacy forms can be downloaded from the State Election Board website at oklahoma.gov/elections or by contacting the McClain County Election Board office at 405-527-3121 or emailing mcclaincounty@elections.ok.gov.

The office is in the McClain County Courthouse. Hours are weekdays 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
