Some area residents have noticed cameras being installed at various locations around Purcell and have reached out to the newspaper.

Purcell Police requested to have cameras installed at two intersections. However, ODOT has cameras at three other locations to monitor traffic.

Current Police Chief and Interim City Manager Bobby Elmore issued this statement concerning the cameras:

“The Purcell Police Department utilizes automated license plate reader (ALPR) technology as a public safety tool to help investigate and solve serious crimes while enhancing the safety of our community,” Elmore said.

“These systems have assisted law enforcement across the country in identifying suspects and vehicles involved in major crimes, including homicides, sexual assaults, high-dollar thefts and robberies.

“They have also proven invaluable in locating missing persons and vehicles associated with AMBER and Silver Alerts, helping bring vulnerable individuals home safely.

“The technology is designed to capture license plate information only. It does not collect personal information about drivers or passengers. The data is not sold, and access is strictly limited to legitimate law enforcement purposes.

“Additionally, the system includes multiple layers of accountability, including automated audits, administrative oversight, and regular reviews to ensure it is being used appropriately and in compliance with department policy and applicable law.

“Our priority is protecting the public while safeguarding individual privacy, and we remain committed to using this technology responsibly, transparently, and only as intended,” he concluded.
