Posted

Wayne Head coach Josh Trent and his Bulldogs were in Velma over the weekend. They lost their first game, but rebounded for back-to-back wins in their final two contests to nab the Consolation.

Wayne (2-4) tipped off the tournament against Empire. Despite a hard-fought comeback, the Bulldogs fell 59-52.

Talon Trent and Brannon Lewelling led their team in scoring with 17 and 16, respectively. Kaleb Madden added nine.

The Bulldogs got in a 17-0 hole early against Empire. But, came back to take a four-point lead in the third. Wayne outscored Empire in the second and third quarters.

But, the Bulldogs ran out of gas by the final stanza and lost their lead and the game.

“I’m proud of how the boys played, coming back from a deep hole. But, we were gassed by the fourth and could not finish the game,” Trent said.

In their second game, Wayne got a 16-point, 55-39 win over Duncan JV.

Once again Lewelling and Trent led the team in scoring with 18 and 16. And Jr. Perez added nine.

In their final game of the tournament, Wayne was in a tight contest with Velma JV. Behind Trent’s 31-point effort, Wayne won 70-60.

Lewelling was second in scoring with 26. Madden was again good for nine points.

Last Tuesday, Wayne was in Velma for a regular season game against the number four Comets in Class A.

“Velma is a very good team. The boys played hard and shot the ball decent, but we just couldn’t stop them,” Trent said.

Wayne about kept pace with the Comets through one quarter, but they pulled away in the second stanza, scoring 20-plus in each quarter.

Talon Trent led the team with 13 points. Brannon Lewelling joined him in double figures with 10. Jr. Perez added nine to round out Wayne’s scoring.

Wayne hosted Minco on Tuesday.

Girls

Josh Trent’s Lady Bulldogs kicked off the Velma tournament with a loss to the Empire  Lady Comets, 44-36.

“We didn’t play well until the third quarter. We were down 20, and came back to lose by eight. We are just not consistent,” Trent said.

Scoring was spread pretty evenly between Lorensa Martinez (9), Kaylee Madden (8), Shyleigh Mantooth (7), McKenzie Fisher (6) and Allie Walck (6).

Coach Trent lamented his team’s lack of consistency.

“I just don’t know which team I’m going to get on the court.”

In their second game Wayne won big against Konawa, 64-27.

Mantooth was the Lady Bulldogs’ leading scorer with 18 points, all from behind the arc.

Martinez was also in double figures with 11. Walck added eight.

In their final game of the tournament, Wayne fell to Davis 48-27.

“We had another off night of shooting. We played hard but could not buy a bucket,” Trent said.

Scoring was distributed between eight players, led by Haiden Parker with seven.

Last Tuesday Wayne fell to Velma 66-50.

According to the coach, the final score does not reflect how close the game was.

“We came within three in the final quarter, but we just could not stop them. This was a good showing for us as Velma is a top ten team in Class A,” Trent said.

Mantooth and Parker were both in double figures for the Lady Bulldogs with 11 and 10, respectively.

Fisher and Madden added eight apiece.

The Lady Bulldogs are 3-3. Their scheduled game with Minco for Tuesday was canceled due to Covid-19.
