Bulldogs slumping

Posted

The Wayne Bulldogs will be in Elmore City starting Thursday for the ECP tournament.

Wayne’s first game is at 2 p.m. against Central.

Head coach Shane Collins and his Bulldogs were in Wynnewood on Monday for games with the Savages and Dibble.

Both games were losses.

The Savages beat Wayne 16-6.

“We’re in a pretty good slump right now and can’t seem to get out of our own way,” head coach Shane Collins said.

“Throwing strikes and hitting the ball is our achilles heel.”

The Bulldogs were up, holding a 5-2 lead through five and a half innings.

But, Wynnewood pushed across five runs to take the 7-5 lead in the bottom of the fifth.

They added seven insurance runs in the sixth to get the win.

Wayne had 10 hits in the loss and four RBIs. Kaleb Madden went yard in the first inning.

Madden manned the mound for Wayne. He pitched five innings, giving up seven runs but striking out five.

In their second game, Wayne held a 5-2 lead through three innings of play.

But, Dibble scored 13 in the top of the fourth to pull ahead.

Wayne fought back, chipping away at the Demons’ lead. They scored five in the fourth, three runs each in the next three innings, sending the game to extra innings.

Dibble got two runs in the eighth, and Wayne managed one to take the 21-20 loss.

With 17 hits in the loss, multiple Bulldogs had two or more hits.

Andy Lee led the team at the plate. He had four hits and six RBIs.

Jr. Perez and Madden had three hits apiece. Ethan Mullins and Lane Jones each had two.

Lee was on the mound for five innings. He struck out four batters.

Mullins came in in relief for three innings. He allowed four runs on four hits.

Last week, Wayne played a round robin in Stratford. The 5-2 win over Wynnewood was the bright spot.

The Bulldogs fell to Stratford, 12-5, Asher, 9-1, and Maysville, 12-2.

“We’ve dropped a few games that I feel like we should have won.

“We’ve been in the cage, taking cuts off the pitching machine a lot,” Collins said.

Wayne was scheduled to host Frederick on Tuesday.
