Purcell’s Dragons tucked four more wins into their belts last week and were 19-9 heading into the showdown district fast-pitch game at Plainview Tuesday.
The winner of that game is the district champion and will host Regionals next week.
The Dragons dumped Ada 11-1 on Senior Night September 17.
KK Vazquez scored three times in the game. Kenna Esparza, Hadleigh Harp and Kendra Anderson all had two hits in the game.
Hannah Whitaker and Anderson both scored twice.
Senior hurler Ella Resendiz struck out a dozen Cougars in five innings of work.
“We got to celebrate our seniors in the victory over the Cougars,” head coach Sarah Jones said. “The evening normally always starts off a little rocky. It is a fun night but also the girls start to think too much and the emotions of it almost are too much. The emotions of the underclassman realizing they don’t have much time with these seniors, is also there.”
In the game, seniors had six of the 10 Purcell hits.
The Dragons dispatched Dickson 17-3 in another key district matchup.
Vazquez was 5-5 including a home run and two doubles, finishing with five RBIs.
Resendiz (a double and a home run) and Maica Martinez (home run) both went 3-5 and both finished with three RBIs.
Mack McKay, Whitaker and Anderson all were 2-4 in the game where Purcell pounded out 21 hits as a team.
The Dragons put up crooked numbers in four of the six innings they played.
Meanwhile, Resendiz starred in the circle fanning nine Comets.
“Dickson was a good win as well that started off a little slow but we ended up having a big win. We had great at-bats and our defense was solid. Ava started in the circle and Ella came in to close. This win made us 12-0 in district play,” Jones said.
In the Dale Festival at FireLake the Dragons knocked off Poteau 7-1 and Hartshorne 8-1.
“We had a solid day against the state’s east side on Friday,” Jones said. “We had a great day at the plate and made some really good plays.
“Ella took the circle for Poteau and had 11 strikeouts. We backed her at the plate with nine hits,” the coach said.
“ Ava took the circle for the Hartshorne game and struck out three.
“Both games we had a really good day of scoring when we had opportunities. We had great selective hitting, had seven walks on the day with 22 hits,” Jones said.
Whitaker’s bat was on fire going 5-6 in the two games. Martinez and Resendiz both were 3-5 on the day.
Esparza went 2-2 against Poteau with a pair of RBIs while Harp was 22-3 with three RBIs. Harp had two RBIs against Hartshorne.
Purcell ends the week with a trip to Byng for their final district game of the season today (Thursday). They are also scheduled to travel to Lone Grove next Monday.
