‘Dawgs and Lady ‘Dawgs each get two wins in Arbuckle Classic

Lexington’s Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs both finished runners-up in the Arbuckle Classic over the weekend.

Picking up wins over Little Axe and Davis, head coach Tyler Thetford’s Bulldogs lost 77-67 to Velma-Alma in the championship.

With a commanding win over Ringling and and 10-point win over Velma-Alma, the Lady Bulldogs lost to host Davis 49-35 in the championship game.

“I’m proud of this team. This is the first time in three years that the girls program has been in a championship game,” head coach Jacobi Couch said.

Girls

Nine Lady Bulldogs scored in Lexington’s dominating win over Ringling, 63-22.

Lexington jumped out in front, holding a 38-14 lead at halftime.

“We played really well. The girls got out and ran and made it a fast-paced game,” Couch said.

The second half was more of the same as they built on their lead to finish with a 40-point win.

Mackenzie Manuel led the team with 13 points. Landri Bean and Maddi Manuel each had 10.

The Lady Bulldogs then faced Velma-Alma and again notched a double-digit win, 54-42.

“Velma is a tough team. They were just a one-loss team before our game.

“We got on them in the beginning and let them back in it. This was a game that we had to dig down and fight to come away with another win,” Couch said.

Scoring was consistent through four quarters and they were 10-16 from the charity stripe.

Despite some foul and turnover trouble, Lexington saw seven girls score on their way to another win.

Maddie Manuel and Abby Sample were in double figures for the Lady ‘Dawgs. They had 18 and 11, respectively.  Rylee Beason added nine.

Lexington faced Davis in the championship game and came up short, 49-35.

“That was an amazing environment to play the home team in a championship game.

“It was a packed game; a big moment.”

Both teams had the turnover bug, but Davis won that battle with 35 to Lexington’s 45.

Beason led the Lady ‘Dawgs with 13 points. Natalie Dicksion added 11.

“We struggled offensively but fought hard. Despite tying it up 21-21, they pulled away. It was good for our girls to be in that moment as they head down the stretch of the schedule,” Couch said.

Maddie Manuel finished the tournament with two double-doubles.

Last Tuesday, Lexington picked up a big conference win over the Lindsay Leopardettes, 64-60.

“That was a big win for us. We played well and I was happy to have Addi Lippel step up and have a huge game.”

The score was tight the whole time, but the second quarter proved to be the difference as Lexington outscored Lindsay 13-8.

Three Lady ‘Dawgs were in double figures in the win. Lippel had 18, Maddie Manuel had 14 and Beason added 10.

Lexington’s Lady Bulldogs are 6-5 on the season. They were in Bridge Creek on Tuesday and will host Purcell Friday night for Homecoming.

Boys

To kick off the Arbuckle Classic, Lexington got a 71-60 win over Little Axe.

Despite being down 40-34 at the break, Lexington fought hard to retake the lead after the third quarter of play. They then outscored the Indians 21-12 in the final stanza to pick up the win.

Zeke Faulkenberry had a team-high 22 points. Ty Mixon added 16 while Ezra Faulkenberry had 13. Trey Hartzog had nine.

Behind Zeke Faulkenberry’s 23 points, Lexington picked up a 62-51 win over tournament host Davis.

Drew Dierking joined him in double figures with 16.

The game was tight through the first two stanzas as Lexington held just a three point, 22-19 lead at the break.

The ‘Dawgs’ hands got hot in the second half, hitting five threes and outscoring Davis 40-32 to win the game and move on to the Championship against Velma-Alma.

This would be another exciting game for the ‘Dawgs as they were evenly matched with Velma-Alma in the championship game.

Behind seven threes in the first half, including two each from the Faulkenberry brothers, Lexington was up 35-31 at halftime.

Velma outscored Lexington in the final two stanzas to get the 10 point win.

The ‘Dawgs committed 15 turnovers in the loss.

Four Bulldogs were in double figures, including 18 from Zeke Faulkenberry, 17 from Hartzog, 11 from Mixon and 10 from Ezra Faulkenberry.

Dierking added nine.

Last Tuesday Lexington hosted Linday but fell to the conference foe, 56-50.

The Leopards jumped in front from the first quarter and would never give up their lead. Turnovers proved a difference as Lexington finished with 19 to Lindsay’s 10.

Ezra Faulkenberry led the team with 15 points. Mixon had 13 and Hartzog had 10.

The Bulldogs (4-7) were in Bridge Creek Tuesday night and are set to host Purcell Friday night for Homecoming.
