Editor’s note: Answering The Purcell Register’s five questions this week is Farmers Insurance Agent Cody Barton.
Q: What’s the most rewarding part of your job?
A: When someone experiences a significant claim such as a tornado, house fire or major car accident, one of the first phone calls they make is to their insurance agent.
On what could be the worst day of their lives, I get to be the one that tells them “We’ve prepared for this, and everything is going to be okay.” I can’t think of anything more rewarding than that!
Q: What is something you do in your job that would surprise people?
A: Whenever possible, I like to go do my own home inspections for new policies. On occasion we need to get on a roof to check the shingles. When its 103 degrees in August and someone sees you walking on top of a house in a full suit and tie, you get some strange looks.
Q: What are your interests in civic volunteer work?
A: I think as a business owner it’s important to give back to your community any time you can. Our agency has been right here in Purcell since 1987. To say we have been blessed by the support of this community would be an understatement. Whenever we are presented with an opportunity to give something back, we want to do it. Being involved in local civic organizations such as Rotary and Lion’s Club are a great avenue for us to do that.
Q: What is something most people don’t know about you?
A: Probably something that most people don’t know about me is I’m a pretty good handy man. There isn’t much that I can’t figure out how to build or fix. The one exception to this would be anything automotive. When it comes to working on cars, I can barely change my own oil.
Q: What do you like to do in your free time?
A: I’ve got two boys at home: ages three and four, so free time isn’t something I have a lot of these days.
But when I do get some time to myself, I enjoy working in my shop tinkering on whatever project I’ve come up with that day, and if the weather is nice, there really isn’t anywhere I’d rather be than on the golf course.
