Purcell’s undefeated baseball team will host a festival Friday with Davis and Tecumseh in the field.
The Dragons open the festival at noon against Davis.
Davis and Tecumseh play at 2:30 p.m. The Dragons and Savages are scheduled to play at 5 p.m., coach Cole Sharp reported.
Sharp’s troupe is on a roll winning their first six games including two over Pauls Valley and knocking off Anadarko at the Bricktown Ball Park Saturday.
Purcell won both Pauls Valley games by run-rule, 12-2 March 10 at home and 15-3 at Pauls Valley last Thursday.
In Saturday’s 10-2 victory over Anadarko at Bricktown the Dragons came out hot scoring three runs in the bottom of the first. They stretched the lead to 5-1 after five and went off for six runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Senior Bryce Blair led the offense with a 2-2 performance at the plate while collecting a pair of RBIs.
Cash Cook, Brody Walkup and Kash Knowles all went 1-3 each with an RBI. Cooper Selman was 1-2.
“We didn’t have our best at bats in that game but we still had some good hits,” Sharp said.
Senior Deaken Dobbins got the start on the mound and pocketed the victory.
“We had Deaken on a pitch count and only threw him three innings since he was just coming from basketball,” the coach confirmed. “I was really proud of him for how he came out and attacked early and competed on the mound.”
Dobbins had eight strikeouts in the three innings of work and walked a pair.
Junior Preston Kane relieved Dobbins and exited after three innings with two strikeouts and one base on balls.
“Preston is doing a good job so far this season coming in relief and giving us some big innings,” Sharp said. “He got himself in trouble but battled back and got a double play.”
Blair closed out the contest in the seventh striking out two of the three hitters he faced.
“I was proud of our guys finishing strong. They built a lead and kept it. This was a good experience for our players playing at the Bricktown ball park. It was neat and I appreciate all the parents who came out supporting our team.”
In the first game with Pauls Valley Kash Knowles went the five inning distance scattering six hits while striking out a pair of Panthers. He didn’t walk a batter he faced.
“He threw really well commanding the strike zone and working ahead in the count,” Sharp said of the junior right hander. “Kash is throwing really well early in the season and he will need to continue to do that for us to have success in the season.”
The Dragons jumped out to a 2-zip lead after two innings but the Panthers struck back to knot the score in their half of the third frame.
Then came the bottom of the fourth when the Dragon bats lit up like the Fourth of July leading to a nine-run inning.
Walkup went 2-4 with two RBIs, Knowles went 2-3, Blair was 2-4 with three RBI’s and Dobbins went 2-3 with an RBI. Both Walkup and Dobbins cracked doubles.
“Bryce is hitting really well for us early in the season in the fourth spot, driving in runs,” Sharp said.
“I was proud of our team, coming out and attacking and putting them away,” the coach said.
In the 15-3 run-rule victory at Pauls Valley, Walkup went the distance on the mound scattering seven hits while striking out five. He issued three free passes.
“Brody settled in after the first inning when he gave up two runs and competed on the mound the rest of the way. He did a great job of throwing first pitch strikes and staying ahead in the count.”
In the hitting department, it was like the second verse.
Purcell erupted for 13 runs in the top of the third when they sealed victory after trailing 2-1.
Knowles led the offense with a 3-3 hitting performance while knocking in a trio of base runners. Knowles, Carter Bennett and Cook all doubled in the victory.
“Kash Knowles had a big game and helped spark the big inning,” Sharp continued. “I was proud of the bottom half of the lineup getting on base and having good AB’s. We need to continue getting that kind of help as the season goes on.”
