Editor’s note: Answering The Purcell Register’s five questions this week is Mike Phillips, owner of Tyler’s Furniture in Purcell.
Q. What brought you into the furniture business?
A. I am a second generation business owner. My parents purchased the furniture store in 1980 when I was 16 years old. I grew up working here with Pop.
Q. How has the business changed over the years?
A. Honestly not much has changed since 1980. There have been many, many ups and downs. Through all the good and bad the one constant is that God has been looking out for us.
Q. What do you enjoy most about owning your own business?
A. What we enjoy most about owning our own business is definitely the people. We have met the most amazing people over the years, they have become more like family and friends instead of customers.
Q. What is challenging about the furniture business?
A. The challenges of a furniture store are trying to figure out what the customers will want and sometimes having to order things a year in advance to stock the store. And just generally keeping the customers happy.
Q. What is it about Purcell that has kept you here all these years?
A. Purcell and the surrounding towns are Oklahoma’s version of “Mayberry.” Wouldn’t want to be anywhere else!
