Editor’s note: Answering The Purcell Register’s five questions this week is Malachi Blaxton, Assistant Superintendant of Purcell Public Schools.
Q. How was your first year at Purcell?
My first year at Purcell has been both rewarding and energizing. I’m fortunate to work in a community that values its schools, students and traditions in the way that Purcell does.
My children have quickly acclimated to being Dragons and enjoy all of the opportunities and community spirit that come with Dragon tradition.
This was a year of building relationships, learning the district, and gaining a deeper appreciation of what makes Purcell special.
I am grateful for how welcoming everyone has been throughout the district and throughout the community.
Q. What were some of the biggest differences from being a principal and what were the major adjustments you made?
As a principal, my work was more focused on one range of students. Having served as an assistant superintendent in the past, I knew this would be an opportunity to support students and staff across an entire district.
The biggest adjustment is shifting from building-level leadership to district-wide planning, operations and facility management. However, my experience as a principal has helped me understand the importance of keeping students and classrooms as the central thought when making decisions.
Q. What did you enjoy most about your new role?
I have enjoyed working with a wide range of people across the district and community.
Collaborating with teachers, support staff, principals, families, and community members has given me a great appreciation for the many people who contribute to student success at Purcell each day.
Each one of our students and staff members matter to me, and I’ve been blessed with an opportunity to help make their lives better.
Q. What do you look forward to in year two?
I’m excited to see several of our construction projects come to completion this year. Students and staff will benefit from new classrooms and safe rooms, a new junior high gym, a new ag barn, and an additional parking lot that will also serve as our band’s practice pad.
These projects enhance learning opportunities and safety while reflecting the pride and commitment our community has for its schools. I look forward to seeing their impact for years to come and continuing to build relationships with community members as we work together to help all students thrive.
Q. What changes do you anticipate for next year after the legislature ended their session in May?
As with every legislative session, we spend time reviewing new laws and funding decisions to understand their impact on students and operations.
While some details are still being assessed, we will continue to balance state requirements with local priorities.
We are here for the students, and our focus will remain on providing a safe environment and high-quality education, while supporting our staff and making decisions that best serve Purcell students and families.
