Wayne was in Alex for a tournament over the weekend and they notched two wins, but fell to host Alex.

In their first game, Wayne lost a close game to the Longhorns, 59-52.

“We thought that was a game we should have won, but we can definitely build on the good things we did,” head coach Jackson Embry said.

Senior Ethan Mullins and junior Kaleb Madden led the Bulldogs with 16 and 15, respectively. Andy Lee added eight.

“We had some lazy defense in the first two quarters, but tightened it up to finish out the game. We wanted to beat Alex,” Embry said.

Wayne got wins over Ninnekah, 65-35, and Stratford, 53-44, to round out the tournament.

“The Ninnekah game allowed us to plug in some younger guys to see how they would respond.

“And, beating Stratford was sweet for us. We haven’t beaten them in way too long.”

Freshman Adolfo Vasquez stepped up for the Bulldogs. He had five points against Ninnekah and six in the win over Stratford.

“Adolfo came in as a freshman and played solid. He stepped up and played a lot of good minutes for us,” Embry said.

With the early season loss of senior Brannon Lewelling, Wayne has had to figure out their identity going forward.

“We are really starting to click and see who we are without Brannon. Defense is what we hang our hat on and we played solid D in 10 out of 12 quarters in Alex.”

Girls

The Lady Bulldogs got a good top 20 win over Mountain View-Gotebo last Thursday, 40-39.

However, they lost their other two games to Calumet, 56-31, and Allen, 47-27.

“This was a good tournament for us. All three teams we played were ranked and we will continue to find ways to get better,” head coach Bill Burnett said.

Kaylee Madden led the Lady Bulldogs with 14 points against MVG. Lorensa Martinez joined her in double figures with 13.

According to Burnett, Wayne played Calumet well and was within 10 points with three minutes to go.

“The kids played well, but they were just big and size has been a challenge for us.

“We had trouble with their big girls. We had to play help defense which opened up outside shots for them.”

Haylee Durrence led the team with 10 points in the loss.

And, on Saturday, Wayne fell to Allen.

“We’ve had sickness and injuries and by Saturday, we just ran out of gas,” Burnett said.

McKenzie Fisher led all scorers with 11 points in the loss.

Wayne’s Tuesday night games with Vanoss were canceled and, as of press time, they were scheduled to travel to Stratford on Friday.

They will be in Velma next week for the Stephens County tournament. The Bulldogs play Empire Tuesday at 4 p.m.
